Hoerner fields bunt and throws between legs for out
Chicago Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner fielded a bunt by Houston Astros catcher César Salazar in the top of the fifth inning and threw the ball between his legs to first base for the out.
The play occurred during the Cubs’ 3-0 loss to the Astros on Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field. Hoerner, a two-time Gold Glove winner, charged the ball barehanded and completed the throw while moving toward home plate; first baseman Michael Busch caught it to retire the runner.
Hoerner’s throw followed similar plays executed by New York Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon and Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle, both of whom flipped the ball behind or through their legs to record outs on weakly hit balls.
The Cubs, who fell to 29-23, face the Astros again on Sunday at 2:20 p.m. ET in the final game of the three-game series at Wrigley Field.
