Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrell Green attends U.S. men's flag football national team trials

Former Washington cornerback Darrell Green, a Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, participated in U.S. men's flag football national team trials held October 17-20, 2024, at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista, California.[1]

Green, 64, qualified for the trials through USA Football's digital combine, where his results impressed evaluators despite his age compared to other participants. "He’s later in his career than the other trials participants, but his testing results were impressive," said Callie Brownson, USA Football’s senior director of high performance and national teams. "Our coaches and staff felt he deserved a closer look."[1]

Drafted by the Washington Redskins in the first round (28th overall) of the 1983 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M-Kingsville, Green played his entire 20-season career (1983-2002) with the franchise, now known as the Washington Commanders. He recorded 54 career interceptions, including six returned for touchdowns, appeared in seven Pro Bowls and won Super Bowls XXII and XXVI.[2][3]

Green was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008. His No. 28 jersey was retired by the Commanders on October 20, 2024.[2][4]

Green aims to earn an invitation to national team training camp next month and a roster spot on the 2026 U.S. squad for the IFAF Flag World Championships in Germany. Flag football will debut as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.[1][5][6]

The U.S. men's flag football team holds the top world ranking and has won gold at each of the past seven IFAF Flag World Championships.[1][7]

"I’m going to give it my best and I’ll walk away with my head up, either way," Green said.[1]
