Brendan Sorsby at crossroads: NCAA gambling probe could end Texas Tech QB's college career
Texas Tech QB Sorsby Enters Gambling Rehab Amid NCAA Probe
Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby has stepped away from football to enter a residential treatment program for gambling addiction. The NCAA is investigating whether he placed bets on college games while on Indiana's roster in 2022, when he redshirted but appeared in one game. The probe also covers allegations of wagering on professional sports, including baseball and UFC.
Sorsby previously played for Indiana in 2022 and Cincinnati in 2025, appearing in games against TCU and Utah. Texas Tech officials learned of the NCAA inquiry earlier this month. The investigation focuses on the extent of his gambling during his time at Indiana and Cincinnati.
In 2023, the NCAA issued guidelines that impose a permanent loss of eligibility on athletes who bet on their own school or other sports at their school. Interviews with Sorsby cannot occur while he remains in rehabilitation.
A finding of ineligibility would bar Sorsby from the 2026 season at Texas Tech. He could seek a court injunction, though NCAA rules on gambling are explicit. The NFL supplemental draft offers another path, as in the 2011 case of Ohio State's Terrelle Pryor, who entered after an NCAA suspension and served it in the pros.
